He pointed out that all the attributes of a good hurler are also required for a successful path through life and he wished them the very best of luck. Other speakers, Brother Patrick Fitzgibbon and Richard Stokes referred to the heartbreaking defeats suffered by both these panels earlier in their hurling lives, yet they recovered to achieve success in 2006. This was the sign of true champions. The trophies were presented to Captains Paul Bennett and Paul Delaney while both panels were then presented with their medals. Master of ceremonies Eamonn O'Donoghue thanked the young Rockies, their coaches, mentors and parents for a great year. |

Finals of the Mycro Indoor Hurling Leagues. St. Anthony's School Hall was packed to the rafters last Saturday morning for the finals of the Mycro Sports Indoor leagues. Unbelievably after 63 games the Champions League finals result came down to the final game and the final goal to resolve the indoor hurling bragging rights in Blackrock for 2007. United emerged victorious on goal difference after three teams finished level on points. Team captain Paddy Lynch was thrilled with the result and with his magnificent display in the final. Coach Harry Canning was exuberant with the victory; "We were total outsiders at the beginning, however the hard work and dedication of the young United players was incredible" he enthused as he settled down to enjoy the victory amidst the celebrations. The Rebels captured the Challengers League title after a great battle with the Blacks. Rebels Coach Jim Brohan was also proud of his charges and praised the sportsmanship of all the youngsters who took part. Coach Mark Dalton was equally delighted when the Blues team captured the Contenders final after coming out ahead of the City and Cons teams. Managing Director of Mycro Sports, Mr. Victor Morgan presented the trophies and medals assisted by Cork hurlers Wayne Sherlock and Ronan Curran, Marketing manager of Mycro Sports. This competition was again an outstanding success due in no part to coordinating skills of Jody Crowley and John Cormack along with the full cooperation of youngsters, coaches and parents.

Congratulations. Congratulation to the Blackrock Intermediate hurlers on retaining their Intermediate status with a one point victory over a very committed Nemo Rangers team after a hard fought contest at Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday 4th February. It was a case of Blackrock's "young guns" coming good in the club's hour of need with great performances from Brian Cashman who scored 1 - 4, Paul O'Sullivan, Mike O'Donoghue, Graham Howard etc. This team will now go on to meet St. Vincents in the Evening Echo Cork County Intermediate Hurling Championship 2007. |

Mycro Helmets Indoor Hurling League Round 3 Round 3 January 27th 2007 0There was a real shock at the Mycro Sports leagues on Saturday morning 27th January when table toppers " Saints" were comprehensively defeated 8 goals to 3 by a resurgent Rockies who were rooted to the foot of the table. "We have absolutely no excuse whatever" declared John Cormack, the Saints supremo, "we were beaten by a better team, but we are still heading the table and we will not be caught again", he confidently predicted. Once again there was some brilliant hurling at the Ballinlough venue, with the Rovers and Rebels picking up three points each from their games. United had two fine victories and joined the Rovers and Rebels on 8 points each behind the Saints with 10 points. Double winners last week, Cons just managed one point from their games and slipped down the table. Another surprise arose when City held the Rebels to a 4 all draw but unfortunately lost out to the Rovers. It was a case of "singing the Blues" for the Blues as they slipped to a double defeat to the All-Blacks and United. |

2007 Review As activity ceases on the playing fields, it is time to thank all the youngsters, coaches, administrators and supporters of the the Blackrock Hurling club who have contributed to making 2006 an excellent year. Over 500 boys registered during the year and hurling activities continued throughout the period. Almost 40 games were played in 2006 in the Mick Cashman Cup competition and who will ever forget the final and replay which both went to extra time? Yet even after that much hurling, Eire Og and Blackrock could not be seperated. Sensibly, it was agreed to share the Cup for the year. Our thanks to all teams who took part and for the sporting attitude adopted by all participants. The good news is that it will again be held in 2007, with all clubs being asked to supply two teams of players born in 1997. The Juvenile section experienced a very busy year also. Huge crowds visited Church Road for the Feile games in June. The Under 16s reached the final of the All-Ireland Carlow Town Cup in July before losing out by just two points to Ahane. The 15s and 13s won their respective City Championships while the 12s recently captured the Mooncoin tournament defeating Ballygunner in the final by a single point. Hurling activity continues in all agegroups within the club aided by the hard work of a dedicated team of coaches. Indoor activity will recommence on 13th January 2007 at Ballinlough and Blackrock Hurling halls. |

Annual General meeting. At the AGM of the Blackrock National Hurling club held on Monday 11th December, Club Secretary Roger Ryan and Juvenile Chairperson, Eamonn O'Donoghue announced their retirements. Roger won a County medal in 1961 when he arrived to work in Cork and joined the Rockies. He later played with Holycross where he played alongside the great John Doyle and Michael Maher. Arriving back in Cork in the 70s he was active in the Blackrock underage for a number of years and later became involved in the Social Committee. He took over as Club Secretary about 12 years ago and his hard work has steered the club to three county titles during his period in office. Roger is succeeded as Club Secretary by Marie O'Brien, whose family is steeped in the traditions of the Blackrock Hurling Club. Eamonn has been involved all his life with the Rockies. He has played at all grades for Blackrock and has been involved as a mentor with virtually every team at the club at some time. Along with Leo Cantwell, he accompanied the Blackrock team, which won the very first Feile title in Thurles in 1971 and was part of the famous Blackrock and Cork teams of the 70s as well as winning a further "county" in 1985. However, his overseeing the restructuring of the Underage sections in Blackrock in 1996 may be his greatest achievement. Eamonn has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of hurling and Gaelic games in the city. Although he has stepped down as Chairman, Eamonn will continue to assist the development of the Blackrock club in other areas in 2007. Present Vice Chairperson, Brother Patrick Fitzgibbon was appointed Chairperson of the Juvenile section for 2007. Chairperson of Blackrock Hurling Club, Mr. Tom O'Sullivan led the tributes to both long serving officers and presented Eamonn and Roger with beautiful crystalware on behalf of the officers and members as a gesture of appreciation for their vast contribution to the club. |

She commended the club on their tremendous work in providing a sporting and social outlet for the hundreds of local children, and for the Club's huge contribution to the local community. In response, Eamonn O'Donoghue, Chairperson of the Blackrock Juvenile section expressed his deep appreciation to the Barry family for their support for underage hurling in the local community over the years. |

Junior Hurling League (2) Final. Blackrock 2 - 6 Whitechurch 1 - 6. Played at Pairc An Locha on the Lee Road on Sunday morning 19th November 2006, in very poor weather conditions, following an outstanding game of hurling. Behind by just a point at the interval, despite playing against a gale and blinding rain, Blackrock had shown great commitment throughout the first half. Declan Dempsey had put over a great point while Mikey O'Donoghue had added the other two from play and a free to leave the score at Blackrock 0 - 3 to Whitechurch 0 - 4. Superb goals in the second half from Shay O'Donoghue and Cormac O'Keeffe put the Rockies on the road to victory. Declan Dempsey and Mikey O'Donoghue added the points and while Whitechurch never gave up, the Rockies were always in control. Congratulations to everyone involved in this victory and to Aidan Long and his fellow selectors for all their efforts throughout the year. |
